Going Out On A Budget – How To Get The Most Out Of A Decent Night Out!
by Libby Walden
Overdraft being eaten away and the next instalment of the student loan isn’t due for a couple of weeks? Exams over but you just don’t want to give up the nights out?
Well here are a few hints that might just get you through:
Get together beforehand: –getting a group of mates together before you hit town ensures cheaper drinks and that you can all share a
taxi or a wander into town later on. Local shops and national chains frequently have great offers on nibbles and drinks, especially those surrounding universities (they know who to cater for!), so by
shopping around you could save even more of that precious going out cash! Eating beforehand is always the best option too! You're only going to regret the 4am kebab! Create a group of people who all
go out together at the same time and also add to personal security – safety in numbers!
Pre-buy tickets – Buying tickets online beforehand will save you time, worry and money. Two minutes on totalstudents.co.uk will
save you the hassle of worrying about getting in the clubs on time or waiting for ages outside when you get there. Q-jumps always help out too and are often included in many of the tickets on
totalstudents.co.uk anyway!
Take advantage of offers – when walking around campus you often are given loads of flyers and leaflets advertising local club
nights and offers - so make use of them! Clubs thrive on the student market and will cater for it, especially during the week when locals have the restrictions of a 9 - 5. Many flyers also advertise
the drinks offers on certain nights so you can organise your cheap nights out to follow the drinks you like!
Budget – in order to help you relax about the money issues when you're out (and also stop you drunkenly taking out more money)
it’s worth visiting the cash point before town and taking out only what you want to spend. Leave your credit/debit card at home!
Get some exercise! – instead of using taxi firms to go out, have a walk. Get a group together and walk to the clubs Alternatively
make sure that if you desperately need to take a taxi you can fill it to the brim – a £20 taxi fare is a lot cheaper when split between six or seven!
Be (a bit) selfish – with regards to drinks. Though rounds might appear to be a good idea, your wallet takes a massive hit when
it’s your turn to buy drinks for a seemingly ever-increasing number of people. Inevitably people wander off after you’ve had your turn and you can often end up out of pocket!
Alternatively don’t be a cheapskate and accept drinks from someone buying a round, just look after yourself –it’s only fair!
Avoid the call of the kebab house! – while you’re probably used to the post-night out bag of chips or doner, it doesn’t
do much for the bank balance when you have to watch the pennies! So walk past the tempting smells of roasting meat and fried chips and go home to a far cheaper, albeit less tempting, glass of water
and piece of toast!
