Insurance and protecting yourself from theft
Written by Kara Rhian Pugh (Swansea Student) & Bianca London (Cardiff Student)

The concept of insurance means nothing to most students but unfortunately we are actively targeted by burglars both on and off campus. Considering that young people aged between 16 and 24 are three times more likely to get burgled - it works out that 1 in every 3 students will be a victim of a theft! - it’s vital that you’ve got yourself covered with the best deals. (See: http://www.universitiesnet.com/student-houses.htm) According to Endsleigh Insurance Services Ltd the average student owns belongings worth over £6,000. Just think of everything you cram into your student room from laptops and clothes to phones and ipods; that’s a lot to replace in the case of a burglary.

We have good news! Insurance isn’t actually that costly; with Ensleigh you can get
insurance from just £16 a year – that’s less than your average night out on the town and
much more beneficial for your health! Most importantly you need to get an insurance package catered to your personal lifestyle and there are plenty of different options to suit everyone. A lot of students believe that they are covered by their parents’ insurance; however this is often far from the truth and by taking out student-designed insurance you can be sure that you will be covered for all types of theft that your parent’s policy won’t cover.

Here we give you 5 fool-proof tips to help protect your belongings at uni:

1. Ensure that your windows and doors are locked, particularly if you live on a ground- floor flat. And be VERY careful about whom you let into your halls.

2. Visit www.immobilise.co.uk to register your valuables which can be tracked directly
back to you if recovered by the police.

3. Don’t flaunt your valuables around for keen thieves to spot and keep your bags zipped
up at all times.

4. When you realise something has been stolen from your room contact the insurance
companies immediately.

5. After taking out insurance on your items take note of their model and serial number.
You could even use an ultra-violet pen to mark personal items with your postcode or other unique forms of identification.
