These days it's all about "glamping" or glamorous camping - complete with feather duvets, designer tents and sheepskin throws. And forget about dank showers and loos; with all the (often solar-powered) facilities available at modern campsites, you may even be able to take your hair straighteners. So if you're a novice "glamper" what exactly will you need to make your camping trip as luxurious as possible? Buying good quality items can make your trip a lot more comfortable and enjoyable - and the right kit should also last a lifetime. Going online to look out the best bargains and offers could be a great way to help bring the cost down. If you choose to use your credit card to pay for some items, remember if you don't pay the balance in full at the end of the month, you could incur interest.
The best tent: The choice of canvas is all-important for any self-respecting glamper. Let's face it - you don't want to rock up clutching your tatty two-man tent to find everyone else is in a Mongolian yurt. So what should you go for? If a teepee isn't your thing, but you're looking for a tent that makes a statement, top designers such as Cath Kidston, Orla Kiely and Laura Ashley all have tents in their homeware collections. Of course, you don't have to make a big dent on your credit card to enjoy a more luxurious camping experience. Buying your own tent might not even be necessary, with many campsites offering use of pre erected yurts, teepees and safari tents.
The best sites: To find the best campsites you'll need to peruse the glamping bible, otherwise known as the Cool Camping: England book, which features 150 of the best campsites across the country. Another place to check would be the Farm Stay UK site, which allows you to search on the term 'alternative and camping'. This brings up wooden wigwams in Dorset, shepherds' huts in the Lake District and yurts in Gloucestershire.
The best kit: The car may already be jam-packed with all your luxury items, but make sure you leave room for an inflatable bed, or you'll never have a good night's sleep. If you really don't have the room, you could just take a foam pad made of memory foam. Hate the feel of sweaty sleeping bags? Get a sleeping bag liner. Available in cotton, fleece and even luxurious silk; some even have built-in insect repellent. If you've bought Orla Kiely's tent, why not go the whole hog and buy her range of camping gear? She has a sleeping bag, torch and wellies to match. And forget about eating burnt sausages off tatty paper plates, go for jewel-coloured acrylic and tough plastic.
Some top tips:
• Put your tent up before you open the wine.
• Bring an eyemask and earplugs so you don't get woken at the crack of dawn.
• Consider bringing a brightly coloured rug to put down outside your tent - it looks funky, is great for sitting on and will make sure you don't track mud into your tent.
• Don't let the party stop when the sun goes down - buy plenty of tea lights and hurricane lanterns so you can keep going until dawn!
• Remember the saying "there's no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes." Let that be your camping mantra.
